Yanari

Yanari (house squeaker) are small onis that appear in houses at night, much more often in wooden noisy houses.

They pop out from under the floor, ceilings and wooden furniture when it’s late at night. They run around the house making rumble and spite while everyone is asleep, scaring the unfortunate inhabitants of the house. Sometimes they also break objects, although that is not their goal.

Yanari love their task and take it very seriously.

Hannya

“What seems to trap a woman between this life and the beyond is the anguish of being hurt by those closest to her.”

Hannya is a woman who, consumed by jealousy, undergoes a transformation that has three stages of development.

Namanari: It still has human features. A pair of small horns have sprouted on her head. She commits evil deeds by practicing black magic. Despite this, Namanari is not entirely evil and she is still vulnerable to Buddhist prayer.

Chūnari: With more powerful magical power than Namanari, she is further from redemption but still vulnerable to prayers. Her horns are longer and sharper, and fang-like teeth sprout from her mouth.

Honnari: the transformation of the woman into a demon is complete, she is completely dominated and blinded by jealousy that she can no longer save herself. She is the most powerful of the three and, in addition to large horns and fangs, she has developed a serpentine body and can breathe fire from her mouth.

Menreiki

Menreiki is a yokai (a Japanese demon) in the category of tsukumogami (objects that acquire a soul after one hundred years from their creation). It is composed of 66 masks from the ancient Gigaku theater. Seemingly innocuous, it is said to possess those who do not wisely wear a mask and force the victims to create a representation of the performances for which the masks were originally used.

Make a wish – the Daruma doll

“The Daruma rewards sacrifice and unwavering force of will. The shape lets the doll return always to an upright position.
Upon purchase, the doll is missing its eyes. Paint one eye in one of the circles while committing to your goal and ask for help to god. Then paint the second eye, giving the god its eyesight back as a thank for helping you, once you archive your goal. Originally, the beneficial effect of the doll was belived to expire after one year. After this span of time, the doll needed to be burned in order to free the god. This process is not meant to be interpreted as giving up on one’s goals. On the contrary it’s imagined as a renewal of one’s vow (and a commitment to buy another Daruma)”.

Tsukumogami

“Tsukumogami are household objects and instruments that have become inhabited by spirits after existing for 100 years. The spirit cause the objects to mutate gaining body parts. Tsukumogami are generally harmless. Usally, they do little more than play pranks on people.
It is said that tsukumogami avoid electrical energy. As such, objects that rely on electricity to function cannot become tsukumogami”.
